Hurricane Rick Threatens the Baja Peninsula

    10/19/2009 -

Hurricane Rick remains a Category Four storm at press time, sitting less than 400 miles south of Cabo San Lucas, Mexico. Winds have reached 185 mph, making it one of the strongest Pacific hurricanes in recent years. The storm should make landfall Wednesday as a hurricane on the southern end of the Baja Peninsula, forecasters say. Several cruise lines have made itinerary changes to avoid the storm (CruiseCritic.com posted this excellent summary of those changes). Contact specific lines directly if you have clients aboard ships currently sailing in this region.

    10/14/2009 -

Southwest Airlines added 104 additional one-way departures daily into its spring schedule that starts March 14, 2010. Most of the flights were added at Chicago/Midway, Baltimore/Washington, Orlando, and Tampa.

Frontier Airlines will add more departures starting Dec. 19 from Denver to several destinations in Mexico, including Cancun, Cozumel, Los Cabos, and Puerto Vallarta.

United Airlines will allow its frequent flyers to book domestic award tickets for 20,000 miles (5,000 less than usual) if they book by Oct. 19 for travel Jan. 10-April 30, 2010 (April 1, 2, and 5 are blacked out; codeshare flights are excluded).

Meanwhile, Virgin America passengers will earn double points (10 points per $1 spent on the base fare, not 5 points) for flights booked Oct. 12-18 for travel through Dec. 15.

Kate Hanni - the founder of the airline passenger rights group FlyersRights.org – filed a federal lawsuit yesterday against Delta Air Lines and an aviation consulting firm alleging that the two companies hacked into her email accounts and her computer to obtain information in an attempt to derail new airline passenger rights legislation that’s winding through Congress this year. Delta denied the charges. Hanni is seeking at least $11 million in damages from the companies.
